How to Adopt

Adopting a pet can be a 15+ year commitment. The objective of our adoption program is to find appropriate homes for each adoptable animal.

An appropriate home is one in which the prospective adopter is willing and able to provide for the needs of an animal. These needs include:

• proper nutrition
• shelter
• grooming
• exercise
• training
• veterinary care
• attention and affection

Every animal is unique and it is important to match each pet to the right family to ensure a successful adoption.

We require that an adoption application be submitted to the Forsyth Humane Society. Once submitted, an FHS staff member will contact you regarding your application. This process typically takes 1 - 2 days.

Our staff and phone volunteers counsel families regarding animal adoption. We help families understand the financial cost of owning a pet as well as the time commitment required. We counsel families to understand the potential dangers of matching young kittens with young toddlers, or the danger of giving a pet as a gift to an unknowing individual. Additionally we provide resource information on a variety of topics including: crate training, house breaking, barking, jumping, nutrition, grooming, exercise, to name just a few.

All animals adopted through the FHS are spayed / neutered as a condition of adoption.

Our adoption fees are not a source of income. The fees cover only the cost of basic medical care and the cost of the animal being spayed / neutered. To adopt a cat or kitten, the fee is $85. For a dog or puppy, the fee is $105. These fees cover the following:
