Forsyth Humane Society

Forsyth Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to enriching our community by promoting the compassionate treatment of cats and dogs. We are committed to: placing cats and dogs into loving homes; advancing community understanding of the benefits of animal companionship; providing needed resources to the pet community; supporting a no-kill adoption center and the spaying/neutering of dogs and cats.

Volunteer Program

Forsyth Humane Society is always in need of dedicated and committed volunteers. We are looking for individuals who are dependable, articulate, people-oriented, and willing to promote the mission of FHS. The minimum age to volunteer is 16 years old unless otherwise stated. Please take a moment to read through the list of opportunities and identify how you can help FHS.

Here’s what you need to do to apply:

  1. Submit an online Interest Form so we can check to see if you match FHS’ needs.
  2. Sign up to attend a 1 hour Information Session to learn about the expectations for volunteers.
  3. Attend a 2 hour Orientation and complete any required additional training to learn the policies and safety procedures for volunteering.

Dog Room Volunteer
Must be 16 years or older. Dog Room volunteers provide routine animal care such as socialization, exercise, and cleaning for our homeless dogs and puppies. These volunteers also provide customer service by working with potential adopters to help them find the perfect fit for their household and lifestyle and assist staff with various duties around the facility as needed. Must complete an additional 4 hours of shadow training. Shifts are between the hours of Tues-Fri 11-6pm, Sat 11-5pm, Sun 12-5pm.

Cat Room Volunteer
Must be 16 years or older. Cat Room volunteers provide routine animal care such as socialization, exercise, and cleaning for our homeless cats and kittens. These volunteers also provide customer service by working with potential adopters to help them find the perfect fit for their household and lifestyle and assist staff with various duties around the facility as needed. Must complete an additional 4 hours of shadow training. Shifts are between the hours of Tues-Fri 11-6pm, Sat 11-5pm, Sun 12-5pm.

Front Desk Volunteer – 
Must be 18 years or older. The front desk is a hub of activity and the first impression guests have of our Adoption Center. Front desk volunteers work alongside the Receptionist on duty by greeting and interacting with guests, answering the telephone, accepting donations, providing information, and keeping our lobby clean. Front Desk Volunteers are tasked with basic office work functions such as making copies, filing paperwork, etc. Must complete 4 hours of shadow training. Shifts are between the hours of Tues-Fri 11-6pm, Sat 11-5pm, Sun 12-5pm.

Intake Area Volunteer – 
Must be 18 years or older. Intake Area Volunteers provide routine animal care such as socialization, exercise, and cleaning for our animals in Isolation and Quarantine. Intake Area Volunteers also assist the Health and Wellness team by providing customer service in the Intake room. Must complete 4 hours of shadow training. Shifts are a minimum of two hours between the hours of Tues-Fri 11-6pm, Sat 11-5pm, Sun 12-5pm.

Volunteer Photographer-
We are seeking individuals with professional photography skills and equipment who are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to photograph not only the animals at our facility but both animals and people at our offsite community events. Volunteers must have their own camera. Must submit sample portfolio to volunteer@forsythhumane.org.

Offsite Event Volunteer – 
Must be 16 years or older. FHS participates in many adoption fairs and community events throughout the year. Offsite Event Volunteers assist the Lead Staff Member at each event by performing a variety of tasks such as handling and showcasing our adoptable cats and dogs while promoting our mission and programs to our guests. Offsite Volunteers also assist with set up and break down of each event, collecting donations, handing out promotional items, etc. Shifts are for the duration of the event, typically 3-4 hours.

Onsite Event Volunteer-
Must be 16 years or older. Volunteer will assist with set up and/or cleanup for various events. Could include setting up tables and chairs in specific design, decorating for a birthday party and clean up after event. Shift duration is typically 1-2 hours.

Youth Activities Volunteer-
Must be 18 years or older. Youth Activities Volunteers have an interest in working with children. Volunteers in this role will guide youth groups such as birthday parties, scouts, school field trips, or Paw Project Day participants through educational and/or craft activities that reflect topics like pet safety and responsible pet care. Shifts vary by event, typically 2-4 hours.

Pet Food Pantry Volunteer-
Must be 18 years old with a valid NC driver’s license and have a vehicle that can be used to transport large amounts of pet food. Volunteer will transport bagged and can pet food from one of our donation sites to the center where it will be repackaged for delivery to one of our Pet Pantry partners and distributed throughout the community.

ROVER Driver –
Must be 25 years or older. ROVER is our mobile RV unit that we use to showcase adoptable pets at offsite events. We are seeking individuals who would be willing to undergo a training session and drive our RV to offsite events. You must be at least 25, have a valid driver’s license and a 3-year clean driving record.

Groundskeeper Volunteers—
FHS is seeking individuals who have the skills and equipment to maintain the grounds surrounding our Adoption Center. If you are an avid gardener, lawn mower, etc. we welcome your talents!

Maintenance Volunteers—
FHS is seeking individuals who have the skills and equipment to help maintain our facility. If you have a knack for construction, plumbing, electrical work, etc. we could use your talents!

Group Volunteers – 
If members of your company, school, or other organization want to volunteer as a group at FHS we would be happy to schedule a project. Please send inquiries to volunteer@forsythhumane.org.
